Does your dog love to sniff and smell their way through the day? Why not learn to harness the power of your dog’s amazing nose?
Scent 1 is your introduction to scentwork where you and your dog learn the basics. Your dog will be introduced to a specific scent and will be encouraged to search for that scent. Talking Dogs Scentwork workshops are set up to teach an active indication, where the dog picks up the hidden article. We have found that this is the most successful and enjoyable way to turn pet dogs into detector dogs. The workshops are not set up for teaching or coaching passive indications (where the dog sits or stares at the article) and as such handlers wishing to work on a passive indication will not be able to work their dogs.
What does this workshop cover?
- Theory presentation – how does scent work and what is a scent picture?
- Teas/coffees and refreshments (included in the cost of your workshop)
- Article/Scent choice – catnip or cheese?
- Starter searches
- Lunch (included in the cost of your workshop)
- How to conduct a free search and basic handling skills
- Preparation for Scent 2
Recognition of achievement
Every dog receives a certificate and rosette in recognition of their attendance and achievement. All dog and handler teams that have attended a Scent 1 workshop are eligible to progress to Scent 2. Workshops are held all across the UK by the team of Talking Dogs Scentwork Accredited Trainers.

Prefer the option of a weekly class?
Check out our Super Sniffers course which covers the same content as our Scent 1 workshop but over the course of 3 weekly sessions.
Please Note: Group classes are not suitable for every dog and some individuals find a group setting too stressful. If your dog is showing signs of fear or aggression towards other dogs or people we highly recommend you consider our Private Training services instead.
